“Land of the free, home of the brave.” The closing lines of the U.S. national anthem have become a national refrain—invoked by presidents, citizens, critics, and admirers alike. What does freedom actually mean in the American context both historically and in the present? Who gets to claim it? In this evening of four compelling talks, presented in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) at the end of May—the month in which freedom is traditionally reflected on in the Netherlands—we took a critical look at freedom in all its complexity. Freedom for whom, and from what? How has the idea been shaped, and how is it contested today? Four talks by James Kennedy, Philip Gorski, Kim Wehle & Clarice Gargard. On Wednesday, the 7th of December, the Martin Luther King lecture was held at the Lighthouse, Hague University of Applied Sciences. The annual Martin Luther King lecture speech was given by Clarice Gargard, journalist, programme-maker, filmmaker and writer.

Cabaretier **Claudia de Breij** overziet de structurele problemen waar Nederland voor staat, veroorzaakt door politici met gebrek aan visie. Het is makkelijk om daar cynisch van te worden, want je zíét het fout gaan. Maar cynisme brengt ons niets. In haar lezing *Voorbij het cynisme* laat De Breij zien hoe het óók kan.
Duospreker **Clarice Gargard** betwijfelt in haar lezing of de huidige machthebbers de existentiële crises die zij zelf mede hebben veroorzaakt, nog wel kunnen oplossen. Ze pleit voor een nieuw, socialer systeem. We moeten eisen dat er een beter systeem komt en tegelijkertijd alvast beginnen met die ons te verbeelden.
